Hakka Mountain Songs (客家山歌 – Shan Ge)

Some stories are written and others are sung. When people leave their homeland, they don’t take everything with them.

Houses stay behind. Landscapes change. Generations pass.

But some things always travel with you.

A song. A melody. A memory.

The Hakka Mountain Songs (客家山歌 – Shan Ge) are among the oldest cultural heritage of the Hakka community. For generations, these songs were sung while working in the fields, walking through the mountains, or meeting with family and friends. They tell stories of love, longing, farewell, hope and everyday life.

For many Chinese-Surinamese families, these songs are much more than music. They form a living connection with the ancestors who left their homeland and built a new life in Suriname and later in the Netherlands. Every melody carries a piece of history.

This way, a melody becomes a story. And a story becomes a bridge between the past and the future.

Family home

Which sound takes you back home?

Not everyone has a memory of a Hakka song, but almost everyone has a sound connected to family.

For example:

The sizzling of a wok in the kitchen.

The clinking of porcelain cups during tea.

The sound of Mahjong tiles on the table.

A Hakka Mountain Song sung by a grandparent.

Your mother or grandparent calling your name.

In stemmen. In rituelen. In recepten.

Not out of nostalgia, but because you understand the future better when you know where you come from.
